Novak Djokovic has been known as one of the best players in the history of tennis and he has been especially good on his beloved hard courts, winning 52 titles and losing additional 17 finals, including five at the US Open.
Novak was one of the main contenders before the last Grand Slam of the season and he played great tennis en route to his eighth final in New York where he will face Juan Martin del Potro, chasing his 14th Grand Slam crown. After a slow start of the season following an injury, the Serb has built his form since Rome and he won titles at Wimbledon and Cincinnati to announce the best possible return that could become even more impressive if he celebrates in the final tonight.
Novak has defeated Kei Nishikori in the semi-final and he is now tied with Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras who also played eight finals at the US Open, leaving the five-time champions Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors on seven.
Novak has won 68 out of 78 matches in New York in 13 appearances and he is one of the most consistent players at the last Major of the season, falling in the third round in 2005 and 2006 before reaching the last four 11 times in a row.
In addition, this is the 14th Grand Slam final on hard courts for Novak overall (he won all six he played in Melbourne) and he has joined Roger Federer at the top of the record standings, with a good chance to pass him for good in the following years if he maintains this form.
Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras are on the same level in this category as well, three behind Roger and Novak, and we have Andre Agassi on 10 and Rafael Nadal on eight. One thing is sure, if Novak stays healthy he will break almost every Grand Slam record on hard courts in the following years knowing how good he is in both Melbourne and New York, especially if he wins his ninth Major on this surface against del Potro.
