World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has congratulated Croatia on winning the 2018 Davis Cup title. Croatia defeated France on the clay of Lille this past weekend 3-1 to win its second title in the competition. Croatian rising star Borna Coric beat French Jeremy Chardy in the opening rubber of the tie before Marin Cilic defeated Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the following rubber to give Croatia a 2-0 lead.
French doubles specialists Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut reduced the deficit to 2-1 after they beat Croatia's Ivan Dodig and Mate Pavic in Saturday's doubles rubber. 2014 US Open champion Cilic didn't fail to deliver when needed most as he handed a straight-set defeat to Lucas Pouille in the fourth rubber to clinch the win for his side.
The two teams posed for a picture after the final was over. "Congrats Croatia for winning the Davis Cup title. These guys are great tennis players but more than that, they are really great human beings I admire and appreciate.
Wonderful photo of both teams together post-match tie is a sign of great respect. That's what sport is all about," Djokovic wrote on Twitter. 2010 Davis Cup champion Djokovic didn't play in the competition this year.
It remains to be seen will the Serb be willing to play the Davis Cup under the new format. Also read: France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert hopes new Davis Cup format fails
