Rusedski: 'Federer, Nadal, Djokovic were winning titles every week. Now...'

The former world No. 4 Greg Rusedski believes that the Big Four word is not the right one anymore in tennis. The Brit suggested there are more and more chances for lower ranked players to achieve success following Fabio Fognini's win over Rafael Nadal.

“You can throw Andy Murray in the picture with Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. Every weekend it was one of those guys winning if it was Masters series, [Grand] Slams or whatever. Barely anybody got a look in. Now we are talking about the next generation.

We are talking about the guys who could possibly push on like Fognini. That’s the thing that makes it quite fascinating", said Rusedski. The fellow pundit Daniela Hantuchova agreed: “It is great news for everyone because it makes our sport so much more interesting.

It is really hard to predict anything from now on. If we were so sure how this tournament was going to go and we were completely wrong we can’t predict anything for the future. It just makes it so much more exciting for the fans, they all wanted Fabio to win”.

Rusedski praised Fognini's performance: “It’s quite incredible what created because he was so solid mentally from start to finish. That was the main surprise, as well as the crowd being behind him. Going into this match, you look at his record in semi-finals Nadal, 12-1 - the only man to beat him Novak Djokovic. Now you put Fabio Fognini, maybe this will be the making to become a top-10 player and go on to better things”.
