A star-stunned field has been set for the Rakuten Japan Open that will take place from September 30 to October 6 in Tokyo. Denis Shapovalov is the last addition to a line-up that already includes the likes of Novak Djokovic, Kei Nishikori, David Goffin and Stan Wawrinka among the others.
It will be a very special year as Djokovic plays the Japanese event for the first time ever. Shapovalov only played in Tokyo one time, last year losing to the eventual champion Daniil Medvedev in a straight-set semifinal match.
He had a very good run defeating the former world No. 3 Wawrinka. Shapovalov will have a busy schedule in the upcoming weeks as, after playing in Montreal, he will head to Cincinnati, then Winston Salem, US Open and then will head to Europe to play the Laver Cup in Geneva for Team World.
It will not be the first time Shapovalov plays Laver Cup as he already played it in 2017. He was thrilled with the experience: “The whole Laver Cup experience was so much fun", Shapovalov said. "It’s definitely something I’m looking forward to this year if I can get onto the team.
Having John (McEnroe) on the side, it was pretty special. You have such a legend on your bench helping you. Unfortunately, it’s a short week and not that much time to get to know the guy and have a lot of pointers – but he’s definitely given me a couple of things that focused on my game – definitely tried to use that and help myself”.
