Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Simona Halep were nominated in the battle for the best Balkan athlete of 2019 for their exceptional results. There’s no surprise that the above three tennis stars were selected.
Even if Novak Djokovic finished the year on the second place of the ATP rankings, he managed to win two Grand Slams this year: the Australian Open, in front of Rafael Nadal, and Wimbledon in the epic confrontation against Roger Federer in which the Serbian saved two championship points.
For Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, 2019 was a break-through year as he reached a career-high of world’s number 5 after a good start of the season, reaching his first-ever Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open. However, this was not the brightest highlight of his 2019 tennis adventure.
The tall Greek defeated Federer and Thiem to win the ATP Finals in November. Switching to female tennis, Simona Halep fights with Djokovic and Tsitsipas in the race for a better position in the Balkan rankings. The Romanian, even if she had been hit by Cupid’s arrows most of the year, managed to win the second Grand Slam of her career, more specifically Wimbledon.
In the final, Simona gave no chance to Serena Williams, even if she was a bit nervous ahead of the match. The contest, held by Bulgarian press agency BTA, is at its 47th edition and the last winner was Croatian Luka Modric, the football player who played the World Cup final and conquered Champions League with Real Madrid.
Now, with him out of the picture, it remains to be seen if one of the three tennis masters mentioned above will manage to obtain the first place..
