Patrick McEnroe, the former tennis player who is now a commentator for ESPN, has picked Novak Dokovic and Serena Williams as his favourites to win the US Open singles titles in New York this fortnight. The US Open began earlier this week in New York and both Djokovic and Williams are through to the third round, as of now.
38 year old Williams has won her first two round matches without dropping a set while the Serbian champion dropped one set in his first two rounds at the tournament.
Patrick McEnroe picks Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams as his US Open favourites
In an interview to PEOPLE magazine at the start of the US Open, McEnroe says, "He (Djokovic)'s looked awesome in his last couple of matches.
Obviously Serena [Williams] is the number one draw, no matter, pandemic or no pandemic. She's still chasing history and trying to tie Margaret Court, so that's the big story." The American also said he was not in agreement that the 2020 US Open winners would have an asterisk next to them.
"People say, 'Well, there's going to be an asterisk next to the win. I don't really buy that. I mean, I think it's different. Obviously, we're all going to remember 2020 is something incredibly unusual, to put it mildly, in the sports world or in the world.
So I'm just happy that the U.S. Open is back." The US Open is the first Grand Slam on the tennis calendar since the pandemic and although some have criticised the USTA for the strict protocols, McEnroe believes that the USTA has done an incredible job putting the tournament together.
"I think the USTA has done an unbelievable job. If you'd given me a choice between a U.S. Open with no fans and no US Open, I'll take the former." Patrick McEnroe has won 1 singles title and 16 doubles titles, including the 1989 French Open, in his career.
He has also been a former captain of the United States Davis Cup team. Novak Djokovic will be aiming to win his 18th Grand Slam singles title in New York - with only Rafael Nadal at 19 Slams and Roger Federer at 20 Slams ahead of him right now.
Serena Williams has the Open Era record of 23 majors and is one short of the all-time record of 24 Grand Slams held by Court.
