Viktor Troicki: Novak Djokovic was fantastic at ATP Cup

Serbian ATP Cup Team Captain Viktor Troicki noted that Serbia was struck by a few unfortunate things and that eventually contributed to them failing to make it past the group stage at the ATP Cup. On Friday, Serbia lost to Germany in their final group state match at the ATP Cup and bowed out of the event.

In the opening rubber of the tie, Jan-Lennard Struff recovered from a set down to beat Dusan Lajovic. In the second rubber of the tie, 17-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic recovered from a set down to beat top-ranked German Alexander Zverev and force a deciding rubber.

In the deciding rubber, Zverev and Struff defeated Djokovic and Nikola Cacic in three sets to help Germany clinch a semifinal spot at the ATP Cup. "We had a lot of bad luck, Filip was not able to play today, Duci (Lajovic) had problems with blisters on his leg.

We fought and did our best. Nikola showed himself very well in the doubles, he played phenomenally, his first official match for the national team… He played great. It took a few points here and there for luck to turn on our side.

In the end we fell just short," Troicki told Sport Klub.

Troicki grateful to Djokovic

Last year, Djokovic didn't lose a single match at the ATP Cup and he led Serbia to winning the inaugural edition of the event. This year, Djokovic won all of his singles matches played at the ATP Cup but he fell short in the key doubles match with Cacic.

"Novak was fantastic, he played every match great and I am very grateful to him for playing before a Grand Slam. He risks and plays hard matches and plays singles and doubles. He did an amazing job. We should all be grateful to him for doing this, for doing his best for our country. I am proud that we fought to the end, we were unlucky. You can't win the ATP Cup every year," Troicki acknowledged.
