After crashing in the quarterfinals of the 2021 French Open last week, Daniil Medvedev entered the Halle Open to begin swing preparations on the grass court. However, Medvedev suffered a setback at the Halle Open, losing to German Jan-Lennard Struff 6-7, 3-6 in the first round.
Playing his first game of the season on a grass court, Medvedev started with a 5-2 lead in the first set, yet Struff returned to the competition and secured the biggest victory of his career. With the start of the Mallorca 2021 Championship in a few days, Medvedev has received the wild card to compete in the ATP 250 event.
Originally scheduled to make his debut in 2020, the Mallorca Championship was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic last year. Therefore, this would be the inaugural edition of the ATP turf tournament held in Santa Ponsa, Spain.
The world number 2 has confirmed his participation in the singles draw and would be the best seed of the event. In fact, the official Twitter account of the tournament uploaded a post to announce Medvedev's wild card entry in Mallorca.
In addition to the Russian tennis star, world number 5 Dominic Thiem, who suffered a defeat in the first round at the French Open, also accepted the wild card at the Mallorca Championship. Other important players such as Pablo Carreño Busta, Casper Ruud, Karen Khachanov and Ugo Humbert would also be part of the singles team.
In addition, the 19 times Grand Slam champion, Novak Djokovic, would head the Mallorca Championship as he has confirmed his participation in the doubles draw.
Woodbridge talks about Novak Djokovic
Having won the Australian Open and French Open already this year, Novak Djokovic needs to win Wimbledon, Tokyo gold and the US Open to complete the Calendar Golden Slam.
And Todd Woodbridge reckons the Serb can pull it off, given the immense resilience he displayed during his title run at Roland Garros. "That final, to come back against [Stefanos] Tsitsipas, fantastic effort from him," Woodbridge said.
"And he's just freshening up, he's down in Mallorca on grass courts getting ready as his preparation for Wimbledon. He most definitely goes in a heavy, heavy favorite for Wimbledon. Now, he does get a bit gnarly at times on court but he's an athlete that's able to focus that into what he needs to do to get the result done," Woodbridge said.
The Calendar Golden Slam refers to winning all the four Majors in the calendar year along with the Olympics gold medal in singles, something that only Steffi Graf has managed to do in the history of tennis.
