World No. 1 Novak Djokovic clinched a straight-set win over Denis Shapovalov but underlined that it wasn't easy at all playing against the Canadian tennis star. Djokovic, seeded at No. 1, earned a 7-6 (3) 7-5 7-5 win over Shapovalov in the Wimbledon semifinal.
“I don’t think that the scoreline says enough about the performance and about the match. He was serving for the first set and he was probably the better player for most of the second set,” Djokovic said in his on-court interview, per the ATP website.
“He had many chances and I would like to give him a big round of applause for everything that he has done today and these two weeks”.
Djokovic reaches his seventh Wimbledon final
Shapovalov made a good start to the match, having earned the first break of the match in the third game to take a 2-1 lead.
Shapovalov had a golden chance to win the opener but he failed to serve out for the first set in the 10th game. After breaking back Shapovalov in the 10th game, Djokovic converted his first set point in the tie-break to win a tight opener.
Shapovalov also had a chance to claim an early second-set break but he failed to convert any of his three consecutive break points in the fourth game. Djokovic saved two more break points in the sixth game, before earning the lone break of the set in the 11th game.
Shapovalov also had a chance to start the third set with an early break but he failed to convert any of his three break points in the second game. Djokovic earned the lone break of the third set in the 11th game and then served out for the match in the following game.
“There is no holding back once you step out on the court, particularly in the later stages of an event that I always dreamt of winning. The dream keeps going,” Djokovic said. “I am trying to take out the maximum of my own abilities every single match and see what happens. Giving up is never an option”.
