ATP Toronto: Rajeev Ram, Joe Salisbury stun No. 1 seeds to claim title

No. 3 seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury surprised top-seeded Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 6-3 4-6 10-3 to win the Toronto Masters doubles title. Ram and Salisbury made a positive start to the match, having broken Mektic and Pavic in the fourth game.

Mektic and Pavic had a chance to get back into the set but they failed to convert any of their two break points in the seventh game. Two games later, Ram and Salisbury served out for the opener. In the second set, Mektic and Pavic failed to convert a break point in the second game but also saved a break point in the third game.

Mektic and Pavic missed out on two break points in the sixth game but finally claimed the first break of the match in the 10th game of the second set to force a decider. However, losing the second set didn't affect Ram and Salisbury, who took an early 6-1 lead in the match tie-break, before realizing their second match point.

Ram and Salisbury get their revenge

Ram and Salisbury made the Wimbledon semifinal, before losing to Mektic and Pavic. Meanwhile, now it's all set for the Toronto singles final between Daniil Medvedev and Reilly Opelka.

"I actually watched almost all of his matches,” Medvedev said of Opelka. “I think he’s playing great tennis here all week long. Today the match he turned around with Stefanos was quite unbelievable, a very hard effort.

Opelka is in a great form, having just beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the Toronto final. "I played great,” Opelka said in his on-court interview. “These courts suit my game, it is no coincidence that John Isner is in the other semi-final.

I think we are the two best servers in the tournament, so for us both to be there, it says something about the conditions. It is live. ”Stefanos has definitely improved his returning. Come 5-5 in the first set, a lot of balls started to come back.

He is a thinker and has a high tennis IQ, so it was expected, but that is what separates him from the rest of the pack”.
