ATP Rome: Holger Rune eases past Fabio Fognini

The 7th seed Holger Rune is through into the fourth round on his Rome Masters debut. The young Dane met the home favorite Fabio Fognini and scored a one-sided 6-4, 6-2 win in an hour and 16 minutes to sail into the last 16.

Holger made the difference with his first serve and played better in the decisive moments. A top-10 star saved three out of four break points and turned 47% of the return points into four return games from eight opportunities.

The Dane hit 16 winners and 15 unforced errors and forged his win in the shortest range up to four strokes. They hit a similar number of service winners, and Holger made the difference with the first groundstroke on serve and return.

Rune produced a fine hold in the encounter's second game following a lucky net cord winner and earned three break chances in the next one after Fognini's loose forehand.

Holger Rune defeated Fabio Fognini in the Rome Masters third round.

Fabio sprayed a backhand error on the first to drop serve and fall 2-1 behind.

The home favorite lost his focus in the fifth game over a questionable call and placed a backhand wide to suffer another break and find himself 4-1 down. Holger served for the opener at 5-2 and experienced his first issues behind the initial shot.

He denied three break points before hitting a terrible smash on the fourth to lose serve and keep the rival in the set. Fabio held at love in game nine to move 5-4 behind and won eight straight points to open a 30-0 lead on the return in the next one.

Rune stayed calm and grabbed four consecutive points to wrap up the set 6-4 after a service winner. The Italian played another wayward forehand at the start of the second set to get broken and send the Dane closer to the finish line.

Rune clinched another break in game three to build a 3-0 advantage and sail toward the top. Fabio avoided a bagel after saving a break point in game six, reducing the deficit but missing a massive chance to earn break chances in the next one.

Holger held for 5-1 and served for the victory in game eight. The young gun landed an ace for a hold at love and a place in the last 16 in no time.
