After 3 days of competition, we are still waiting to see a 3-setter in Marrakech, with another 5 one-sided matches played on Wednesday. 3rd seed Borna Coric advances to the quarter-final after not playing a single point yet, as Simone Bolelli gave him walkover because of the knee troubles.
This will be only second quarter-final appearance for young Croat this season, making final in Chennai in first event of 2016. French veteran Paul-Henri Mathieu played a very good match against qualifier Maximo Gonzalez, reaching last 8 with 7-6 6-0 victory.
Gonzalez fought well in the first set, saving 6 out of 7 break points to reach a tie break. Mathieu had a 5-2 lead after he broke in game 6, and he missed 4 set points in the next few games, letting Gonzalez back into the set.
In tie break, Paul-Henri stepped in at 4-4, taking the last 3 points to finally wrap up the set. Frenchman breezes past through the second set, taking it 6-0 after losing only 5 points on serve. Another experienced player, Albert Montanes, will play in his first ATP quarter-final since Kitzbuhel in August.
He defeated fellow Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-4 6-4 after just 76 minutes. The reason for this lies in quick games, with only 3 deuces in the entire match. Both players were off to a slow start, with 3 breaks in the opening games.
Montanes made 2 and that was enough to keep the lead until the end. He served much better after that game when he got broken, not giving any chance to Gimeno-Traver. In the second set, Gimeno-Traver struggled even more on serve, with only 34% of the first serve in, and despite taking some important points on his second serve, he couldn"t survive until the tie break.
Montanes broke him at 15 in game 7 to seal the match soon after that, losing only 6 points in his games. Facundo Bagnis is playing his 9th tournament on clay in 2016, and he is in very good rhythm, winning 3 Challengers. He toppled 2nd seed Joao Sousa 6-2 6-4 in just 70 minutes, playing much better in most of the match to advance to his first ever ATP quarter-final.
Sousa made a break in the very first game of the match but he couldn"t continue in the same rhythm, losing 6 of the next 7 games as Bagnis broke him 3 times. The same thing occurred in the second set, Sousa was the one who made an early break but it was short-lived.
He wasted 40-15 in the next game on his serve and didn"t recover from that until the end, as Bagnis made a decisive break in the 10th game, to seal the victory.
