DAVIS CUP: Gasquet routinely handles Coric, Cilic beats tricky Pouille to cheer up the local crowd- View: 2119 by Dzevad Mesic
After an early break and 3-0 lead in the opening set, Gasquet managed to hold on and close out the first set with just two games lost. The Croatian clearly played much better in the following set as he even had a serve at 5-4 to clinch the set, but unfortunately fell short in that attempt.
The Tricolor then went on to win the set in a tie-break. A heartbreaking second set loss was too much for Coric, who easily lost the third set, and eventually a point for his country. Throughout the encounter, Gasquet served 8 aces and hit 27 winners.
The big-serving player needed four-sets in order to outclass the rising Frenchman 6-1 7-6 (4) 2-6 6-2. After a one-sided first set, Pouille up better performance in the next set, but still failed to level the match at one set all.
The 22-year-old Tricolor regrouped himself in the third set and took that one with just two games lost. However, Cilic then returned a favor to Pouille as he won the fourth set in a convincing way. Cilic has served 11 aces, hit 30 winners -- Pouille hit six aces and 15 winners.
Croatia and France are now leveled at 1-1 after Friday's opening two matches. Full results: Richard Gasquet (FRA) d. Borna Coric (CRO) 6-2 7-6 (5) 6-1
Marin Cilic (CRO) d. Lucas Pouille (FRA) 6-1 7-6 (4) 2-6 6-2
