The 4th seed Thomaz Bellucci and Janko Tipsarevic have battled for 2 hours and 10 minutes before Brazilian went through by 7-6 7-6. Almost nothing could separate the rivals, as they both saved 4 out of 5 break points to remain close to each other all the time, and it was Bellucci who held his nerves better in the crucial moments. Janko saved 4 break points in the first game of the match and in the rest of the opener they both served well to enter a tie break, in which Thomaz converted his 7th set point, wasting a 6-2 lead before he clinched it by 10-8 (Janko also had a set point at 8-7, losing the next 3 points).
Set number 2 started with early breaks and in the closing stages Bellucci fends off another 2 break points to set up another tie break, far less dramatical than the first one. He won it by 7-2, with mini-breaks in the 6th and 7th points, to book his place in the last 8, for the first time since Moscow.
In the last match of the first round, two-time defending champion Victor Estrella Burgos took down Andrej Martin 3-6 6-2 6-4, overcoming a slow start to set the second round clash with Ivo Karlovic. Estrella Burgos held his serve better, making a clear difference on his second serve, and he faced just 6 break points, losing serve thrice. On the other hand, Martin had to defend his games much often, playing against 13 break chances and dropping serve 5 times.
The second part of the opening set produced 3 back-to-back breaks, Martin scored 2 to grab the set by 6-3, but it was Estrella Burgos who raised his level in set number 2, taking the last 4 games for a 6-2 result, sending the match into a decider.
There, the rivals stayed tied at 4-4 before Victor claimed 8 out of the final 9 points to finish the match with a break at 15 in the final 10th game to move forward, staying undefeated here in Quito.
