ATP MARRAKECH: Tough wins for Coric and Ramos-Vinolas. Paire and Chardy are also through

Wednesday brought some very interesting matches in Marrakech, with 5 grueling battles and more comfortable win for Jiri Vesely. Last year's finalist Borna Coric and the second seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas both reached the quarter-final, but they had to dig deep to book the place in the last 8. The home player with a wild card, Reda El Amrani, pushed Borna to the limits, Croat won the match by 6-2 3-6 7-6 after 2 hours and 41 minutes, in what has been yet another insecure and shaky performance from the next generation star.

El Amrani had a 5-3 lead in the final set, serving for the win at 5-4, but Borna managed to get back to the scoreboard at the last moment, taking the victory in the tie break. Coric faced 11 break points, saving 8, and he scored 4 breaks from 10 chances, winning 41% of the return points.

Nothing suggested that this could be an open match, with Borna winning the opening set by 6-2, being on a 5-game streak and with a double break in the hands. Nevertheless, El Amrani raised his level in set number 2 to create an early gap, and he brought the set home with another break in game 6 for a 4-2, delivering a couple of strong service games for a 6-3, sending the match into a decider.

Morrocan was the better player in those moments, putting Coric's serve under a constant pressure in the opening 5 games and finally converting his 5th break point to build a 3-2 lead. El Amrani lost just 3 points on serve in the first 4 service games but he needed all the good serves he could find in game 10, serving for the win and the place in the quarter-final.

He was 2 points away when Borna pulled the final two points to score a necessary break that kept him in contention. In game 12 Reda fought off 3 match points, avoiding to be broken twice in a row, and it was the tie break to decide the winner of the match.

It was a close one but Borna scored a crucial mini-break in the 10th point for a 6-4, finally ending the match 2 points later to avoid the big surprise.
