ATP Lyon: Marterer sends Monfils packing. Simon and Lajovic reach round two

Gilles Simon is through to the second round of his home event after a 6-4 6-2 triumph over a qualifier Jordi Samper-Montana in an hour and 22 minutes. The Frenchman has played one of his best matches of the season so far, serving at 71% and dropping 13 points in nine service games, losing his serve only once. On the other hand, he won 50% of the return points, creating 10 break chances and stealing rival's serve four times to reach the second round in style.

Gilles found his rhythm right from the start and he broke Samper-Montana in the opening game of the match to gain the lead. Jordi had to save four set points on serve in game nine but Gilles was not to be denied, holding at love in the following game for a 6-4.

The second set kicked off with back-to-back breaks but it was Simon who had the upper hand after that, winning the last five games of the match, including breaks in games five and seven before he crossed the finish line with a hold at love in game eight to reach the last 16. First round results:
