ATP Lyon: Thiem notches the 100th win on clay. Fritz eases past Ebden

World number 8 and the top seed in Lyon Dominic Thiem has scored his 100th ATP win on clay after a 6-2 6-4 triumph over his coeval Roberto Carballes Baena in 70 minutes, advancing to his eight quarter-final of the season. The Austrian served at 49% but no one could notice that on the court, losing just nine points in nine service games and never facing a break point.

On the other hand, he won 43% of the return points, scoring three breaks from five opportunities to seal the deal in straight sets. Dominic kicked off the match with a break in the opening game, firing a forehand winner to gain an early advantage and earning another break in game three when Roberto netted a forehand in game three.

The Spaniard couldn't do much on the return and Thiem closed the set with a hold in game eight after half an hour. Carbalees Baena hit a double fault at the start of the second set and that proved to be the pivotal moment of the entire set, as they both served well in the remaining games.

Dominic held at 15 in game 10 to wrap up the win and book his place in the last eight, hoping to bounce back after a poor run in Rome. Tuesday's results:
