World number 6 Juan Martin del Potro has scored his 27th win of the season after a solid 6-4 6-4 6-4 triumph over the 9th seed John Isner in an hour and 59 minutes, reaching his third quarter-final in Paris and the first since 2012. This was their 11th meeting and the seventh win for the Argentinian who lost the previous two encounters against John in Paris last fall and in the semi-final of Miami two months ago.
Also, del Potro is the third Argentinian who has reached three Roland Garros quarter-finals after Guillermo Vilas and Guillermo Canas, hoping to advance into the semis for the first time in nine years. Juan Martin served well and he faced two break points in the entire match, saving both to keep his serve intact.
On the other hand, he did enough on the return to create seven break chances and he converted one in each set to seal the deal and wrap up the win in straight sets. Del Potro controlled his pace nicely, firing bombs from his serve and forehand and reducing the number of errors to keep the pressure on John who was unable to follow that pace and reach at least one tie break.
As was expected from these two, we saw nine easy holds in the opening set but one loose service game from Isner cost him the set when Juan Martin broke him in game seven to clinch it 6-4 with a good hold in game 10. The American had a great chance to open the second set with a break but he wasted two break points in game two, never earning another opportunity by the end of the match.
Just like in the opening set, Juan Martin broke in gave seven and he moved two sets to love up with a hold at 15 in game 10. Carried by this momentum, the Argentinian sailed through his service games in set number three and he created four break points on the return, converting one in game three to move 2-1 in front and to keep the lead until the 10th game when he crossed the finish line after a deuce, setting the quarter-final meeting against another US Open champion Marin Cilic.
