ATP Atlanta: De Minaur and Lacko reach R2. Rain halts the action

After a tight loss to Ivo Karlovic in Newport, the 19-year-old Alex de Minaur is back on the winning way, notching his 12th win of the season following a hard-fought 1-6 7-6 7-6 triumph over a lucky loser Hubert Hurkacz in two hours and 21 minutes. Thanks to that opening set, Hubert won more points than Alex but he fell short in the most important points of the last two sets, being two points away from the victory in the deciding tie break.

De Minaur suffered four breaks from five break points he faced but that wasn't enough for the Pole to bring the match home, despite the fact he got broken only twice from nine opportunities he gave to the young Aussie.

Hurkacz was off to a perfect start, dominating on both serve and return to grab 20 of the opening 24 points to race into a 5-0 lead before he closed the set with another easy hold in game seven. He broke Alex in the third game of the second set as well and had two game points in the following game to cement his lead and move closer to the finish line.

De Minaur found an extra gear to earn a break in that game and he was on the level terms with his rival from that point, serving well and creating a set point in game 10. Hubert saved it to reach the tie break but Alex was too solid there, winning it 7-0 to set up the deciding set.

There, Alex served better and he kept the pressure on his opponent who saved three break points in game three before getting broken in game nine. Serving for the match in game 10, de Minaur had to give his serve away as well and the match had to be decided in the tie break.

The Aussie had a 4-1 lead before Hubert climbed back to 5-5, only to lose the next two points and hand the win to Alex who will now face the top seed John Isner. First round results:
