World number 4 and the top seed in Los Cabos Juan Martin del Potro is off to a winning start after a 7-5 6-3 triumph over a qualifier Marcos Giron in an hour and 35 minutes, notching his 33rd win of the season. The Argentinian fired 10 aces but he struggled a little bit on his second serve, facing seven break points and getting broken twice.
On the other hand, he won almost 50% of the return points and that gave him 10 break chances and four breaks, enough to prevail in straight sets. Marcos created two break points in the very first game of the match but Juan Martin fends them off with two winners, avoiding an early setback and repeating that in game five when he repelled a couple of break points with two direct points from his forehand and smash.
Marcos wasted his chances and he gave his serve away in game six after a double fault, only to break back in the following game after claiming a 31-stroke rally that kept him in the opening set. Del Potro lost the ground a little bit in those moments and he got broken again in game nine when his forehand finished in the net, allowing Marcos to serve for the set.
World number 446 couldn't hold his nerves, losing serve after a forehand winner from del Potro who held with a service winner in game 11 for a 6-5. Serving to stay in the set, Giron suffered another break in game 12 and the Argentinian was 7-5 ahead after almost an hour.
Del Potro saved a break point at the start of the second set with a forehand winner and he stole rival's serve in game eight when Marcos sprayed a backhand error to find himself 5-3 down. Four service winners in game nine sealed the deal for Juan Martin but he will have to play better in the following rounds if he wants to go all the way here in Los Cabos and claim his third title of the season, the second in Mexico.
