ATP Stockholm: Ernests Gulbis tops Isner to set Stefanos Tsitsipas clash

The 20-year-old Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas has made another big step towards the place in the Top 10, defeating the 2nd seed Fabio Fognini 6-3 6-2 in an hour and 16 minutes for his third ATP final of the season and the 38th win of the season! It was a battle of the players who did a lot so far in 2018 but Stefanos was the dominant figure, serving at 75% and fending off all four break points in the last game of the opening set to keep the pressure on Fabio who couldn't follow that pace, losing 44% of the points in his games and suffering three breaks from 10 chances he offered to the youngster.

Stefanos was especially good in set number two when he dominated from start to finish to wrap up the win and move a step closer to his maiden ATP title. It was a good start from both in the opening seven games and Fabio wasted two game points at 3-4, losing serve after a terrible forehand and allowing Tsitsipas to serve for the opener.

That ninth game proved to be the longest of the match and Fognini squandered four break points, three after unforced errors before Tsitsipas closed the set with a service winner in just under 40 minutes. The Greek served at 85% in set number two and he sailed through his games, dropping three points and waiting for a chance on the return to create a crucial gap and bring the match home in straight sets.

Fognini held in the opening game after saving three break points but he netted an easy backhand in game three to fall on the fourth break point he gave to Stefanos who was in a commanding position now. Serving at 2-4, Fabio suffered another break when his backhand landed long and Stefanos sealed the deal with another nice hold in game eight, securing the place in the final where he will not have to play against Rafael Nadal like in Barcelona and Toronto!
