ATP Finals: Roger Federer downs Novak Djokovic to help Rafael Nadal

Playing against each other for the 49th time and the first since that epic Wimbledon final, Roger Federer took down Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 for the first victory over the Serb since 2015! It was the 23d triumph for Roger over Novak, producing an incredible serving performance to mount the pressure on Djokovic who already felt it after having to win the match to stay in contention for the year-end no.

1 spot. Thus, he is out from the tournament in the round-robin stage only for the fourth time and the first since 2011, allowing Rafael Nadal to finish as the year-end no. 1 for the fifth time in a career! Djokovic forced an error from Roger in the first game to save a break point before Roger found the way to move in front in the third game with a break at love, defending nicely until he forced a mistake from Novak and moved 2-1 in front.

Federer sailed through his service games in the rest of the set, claiming it 6-4 after only 35 minutes thanks to hold at love in game ten. Roger fired 12 winners and only one unforced error, keeping the points on his racquet and delivering breaks in games five and nine in set number two to seal the deal and reach the semi-final for the 16th time in 17 appearances at this event!
