The top seed Daniil Medvedev came to the Diriyah Tennis Cup as the favorite for the title, proving that on the court to become the inaugural champion of this exhibition event in Saudi Arabia. World no. 5 had a stellar run in 2019, winning the most matches on the Tour and lifting four ATP trophies, including two Masters 1000 crowns.
Standing strong against the lower-ranked opponents, Medvedev defeated Jan-Lennard Struff, David Goffin and Fabio Fognini in straight sets, dropping 14 games in six sets to lift the trophy and huge prize money. In the title match, Daniil ousted Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour, dominating over the Italian who struggled with a back injury and played well below his usual level.
The Russian barely lost more than ten points in eight service games, never facing a break point and mounting the pressure on the other side of the net with an energetic performance on the return as well, delivering four breaks to seal the deal in no time at all.
Fabio sent a backhand long to lose serve in the first game of the clash, with Daniil holding at love with a service winner to cement the advantage and move 2-0 in front. The Russian grabbed another break with a drop shot winner in game five against the rival who was barely walking around the court, securing the opener with a service winner in game eight for a 6-2.
Never finding the rhythm, Fabio suffered a break in the first game of the second set, allowing Daniil to convert the fourth break chance in game seven and celebrate the title after an ace in the next game. Daniil will try to keep this form and deliver more of the same at the ATP Cup in January, in the best possible preparation for the Australian Open.
