ATP Rome: Diego Schwartzman sets Rafael Nadal clash. Dimitrov, Shapovalov advance

Competing in his first Masters 1000 tournament, a qualifier Dominik Koepfer will play in the quarter-final against world no. 1 Novak Djokovic. The German took down the young Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-0 in 70 minutes, fending off all five break chances and breaking a teenager four times from as many opportunities to advance into the last eight.

Koepfer had 17 winners and 16 unforced errors while Musetti couldn't follow that pace, spraying 20 mistakes and staying below ten winners, finishing his breakthrough run in the third round. The German grabbed a break in the third game following a double fault from the youngster, holding at 15 with a smash winner to confirm the advantage.

Lorenzo played well in the rest of the set, creating three break points but failing to seize any. Serving for the set at 5-4, Koepfer defended a break chance with a backhand drive-volley winner, firing two service winners to bring it home and gain momentum ahead of set number two.

There, he grabbed all six games to deliver a bagel and move over the top with a service winner at 5-0, extending his incredible run in Rome. Matteo Berrettini needed two hours to win an all-Italian clash against Stefano Travaglia 7-6, 7-6, wasting a break advantage in both sets before sealing them in the tie break to remain on the title course.

Twenty-three years after his father did that in Monte Carlo, Casper Rudd will compete in the first Masters 1000 quarter-final, defeating Marin Cilic 6-2, 7-6 in an hour and 33 minutes. The Norwegian won three points more than the Croat, erasing both break points and stealing Marin's serve twice in the opener ahead of a tight second set.

Marin barely lost a point on serve in set number two before the tie break, wasting his chances on the return early on and falling short in the tie break to propel Casper into the quarters.

Matteo Berrettini, Denis Shapovalov, Grigor Dimitrov have reached quarters.

The 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov ousted the young Italian Jannik Sinner 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 24 minutes, suffering three breaks and delivering four to cross the finish line first. Jannik won the opening set with a single break in the first game, producing another one at the beginning of the second to move closer to the finish line.

Grigor broke back in the next game to stay in touch, stealing the set with another break at 5-4 and opening a 3-1 gap with a break at love in the decider when Jannik's backhand landed long. The Italian broke back in the last moment to reduce the deficit to 5-4, only to suffer a break in game ten on Dimitrov's fifth match point.

The 8th seed Diego Schwartzman toppled Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and nine minutes, setting the quarter-final clash with Rafael Nadal. The Argentine trailed 4-2 in the final set before rattling off four straight games to race over the top.
