ATP Finals: Marcel Granollers & Horacio Zeballos stun No. 1 seeds

No. 4 seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos surprised top-seeded Mate Pavic at the Nitto ATP Finals 7-6 (4) 6-7 (4) 10-8 to improve to 2-0 in Group Bob Bryan. Granollers and Zeballos saved a break point in the second game, two more break points in the eighth game, before they realized their first set point in the first-set tie-break to win the opener.

In the second set, Pavic and Soares saved a match point in the 12th game to force a tie-break, in which they converted their first set point to force a decider. Granollers and Zeballos lost the second set on a disappointing way for them but regained their focus for the match tie-break as they realized their fourth match point to claim a tight win.

Pavic and Soares saved two consecutive match points in the match tie-break but couldn't save the third as Granollers and Zeballos claimed the win. "They saved two match points [in the Match Tie-break] with amazing points, but we were playing really good and we had match point on serve,” Granollers said after the match, per the Nitto ATP Finals website.

“We had to focus on that point. Horacio served a wide serve and Bruno missed the return… The match was really close and we are very happy”.

Zeballos says he and Granollers are never looking back

"[Marcel] is very positive,” Zeballos said.

“He is always trying to go forward, not thinking about the past, and that is really important… I think that is one of the best things we are doing this week”. In the evening sessions, No 7 seeds Jurgen Melzer and Edouard Roger-Vasselin recovered from a set down to edge out sixth-seeded John Peers and Michael Venus 2-6 7-6 (4) 12-10 and improve to 1-1 in Group Bob Bryan.

Peers and Venus, who would have qualified for the semifinal with a win over Melzer and Roger-Vasselin, won the first set easily after claiming two breaks. Melzer and Roger-Vasselin saved a match point on their serve in the 10th game of the second set, before they realized their third set point in the tie-break to force a decider.

In the match tie-break, Melzer and Roger-Vasselin saved four set points, before converting their first match point to complete a comeback win. Melzer and Roger-Vasselin will take on Granollers and Zeballos in their final Round Robin match on Friday, while Pavic and Soares will be meeting Peers and Venus. Melzer and Roger-Vasselin will now be aiming to clinch another big win and try to seal a semifinal spot.
