A qualifier Lloyd Harris is through to the second round in Doha, beating the 7th seed Stan Wawrinka 7-6, 6-7, 7-5 in two hours and 40 minutes. The South African claimed three points more than the Swiss and saved seven out of eight break points to reduce the initial shot deficit.
He broke Wawrinka twice, which was enough to carry the victory home and secure his first top-20 triumph from eight encounters. Lloyd saved four break points in the second game to avoid an early setback, with both players serving well to reach a tie break.
Harris claimed it 7-3 following Wawrinka's backhand mistake, gathering a boost and moving closer to the finish line. Stan barely lost a point in the second set's six service games, keeping the pressure on his opponent and wasting three break opportunities in game seven.
With no room for errors, the Swiss bounced back from 4-2 down in the tie break and won it with two winners at 6-6 to force a decider.

Trailing 5-4, the South African grabbed 12 of the last 15 points to steal the victory, breaking Wawrinka at 30 in game 11 and holding at love a few minutes later for the most notable success of his career. The 6th seed David Goffin ousted Filip Krajinovic 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 21 minutes, beating the Serb for the third time in five matches.
The Belgian lost 13 points in ten service games, never facing a break point and stealing Filip's serve once in each set to seal the deal in straight sets. David grabbed a break at 3-3 in the opener thanks to Filip's forehand error, confirmed the advantage with a forehand winner in game eight and closed the set with a service winner at 5-4.
Krajinovic sprayed a forehand error at 2-2 in set number two and moved over the top with an unreturned serve in game ten for the place in the last 16. The Rotterdam finalist Marton Fucsovics defeated Dusan Lajovic 7-6, 6-3 in an hour and 43 minutes, losing serve once and delivering three breaks to advance into the next round.
