ATP Wimbledon: Novak Djokovic eases past Cristian Garin to his quarter-final

World no. 1 Novak Djokovic will compete in his 12th Wimbledon quarter-final and the 50th at Majors following a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Cristian Garin. The encounter lasted for an hour and 48 minutes, and Novak had the upper hand from start to finish, as was expected against the Chilean, who had no Wimbledon wins before last week.

It was another rock-solid performance from the five-time Wimbledon winner, hitting 28 winners and 23 unforced errors and dropping only 13 points behind the initial shot. Garin converted those into two break chances, wasting both and dropping almost half of the points in his games to give serve away five times and push Djokovic over the top in under two hours.

Novak will now face Marton Fucsovics in the quarters, and he should be the favorite in that one.

Novak Djokovic is through to his 12th Wimbledon quarter-final.

Novak made a furious start, losing one point on serve in the opening set and producing two breaks for 6-2.

The Serb broke the Chilean at love with a forehand crosscourt winner in the opening game and repeated that at 3-1 to extend the advantage. Djokovic wrapped up the first set with a service winner at 5-2, securing it in 23 minutes and hoping for more of the same in the rest of the clash.

Garin squandered two break chances early in the second set and stayed in touch until 4-4 before Djokovic grabbed the crucial break that sent him further in front. After a perfect opening set, Novak had to dig deep at the beginning of the second, fending off two break chances in the second game and failing to steal the rival's serve in the next three return games despite having plenty of opportunities.

The five-time winner finally scored a break at 4-4 and clinched the set a few minutes later following Garin's mistake to move closer to the finish line. Like in the opener, Djokovic sailed through his service games in the third set and kept the pressure on the other side.

He broke Garin in the first game and extended the advantage with a break at love in game five. Serving at 5-2, Novak fired a service winner to seal the deal and sail into the last eight, moving three wins away from the 20th Major crown.
