The biggest upset on Thursday at the Western & Southern Open was that of Naomi Osaka. Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann came from down a set down to oust the world no. 2 and second seed, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and four minutes in the round-of-16.
Teichmann had 21 winners to Osaka’s 17 and 12 fewer errors than the Japanese’s 29. In the press conference following her win, Teichmann spoke about how she changed the course of the match after losing the first set.
She said, “I started actually really bad, two breaks down. I did breaks on my own. I wasn't serving good. I was doing unforced errors. So, when I sat down after the first set, I was, like, 'Okay, I started off bad, but I'm actually close.'
I didn't really feel like she's much better than me today right now. I took this confidence into the second set. I was like, 'Okay, let's serve out well, and I will get my chances,' and to break her and that's a little bit what happened”.
In the quarter-finals, Teichmann will play fellow countrywoman, 10th seed Belinda Bencic. Bencic advanced to the last eight after her opponent, Karolina Muchova retired mid-match with injury. At the time of Muchova’s retirement, Bencic was leading 7-5, 2-1 in the match.

Karolina Pliskova ended the streak of four losses against Jessica Pegula in their third-round clash. The fifth-seeded Czech clinched a 6-4, 7-6(5) win in an hour and 24 minutes.
For a place in the semi-final, Pliskova will play Paula Badosa. The Spaniard defeated Elena Rybakina 6-2, 7-6(5) in their round-of-16 meeting. Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova will take on each other for a place in the semi-finals.
The German posted a comeback 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Jelena Ostapenko in an hour and 56 minutes. The Czech, on the other hand, had a clinical 6-1, 6-2 win against Ons Jabeur. The last quarter-final at the Western & Southern Open will be played between top seed Ashleigh Barty and ninth seed Barbora Krejcikova.
Barty won 6-0, 6-2 against 14th seed Victoria Azarenka. Krejcikova defeated Garbine Muguruza 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2. The last-eight encounter between Barty and Krejcikova will be a rematch of their Wimbledon fourth-round match. The Australian had won that match, before going on to win her second Major at Wimbledon.
