Simona Halep and Darren Cahill call time on their coaching partnership

Simona Halep announced that she and her coach, Darren Cahill have decided to part ways. The Romanian posted the announcement on social media. On Twitter, the former world no. 1’s tweet read, “After six wonderful years working together (Darren Cahill) and I have decided that it’s time to end our working relationship.

Thank you, D for everything, for making me a better tennis player and a better person”. Halep tagged Cahill’s Twitter handle in her tweet. The Australian first joined Halep’s coaching team in 2016 and helped her reach two Major finals, the 2017 French Open and 2018 Australian Open.

Later in 2018, Halep went on to win her first Major, at the French Open, under Cahill’s tutelage. Under Cahill’s mentoring, Halep also went on end the 2017-18 season as the world no. 1. In 2018, following the 29-year-old’s Grand Slam breakthrough, Cahill and she split as mentor and protégé on account of the former wanting to be with his family.

Towards the end of the 2019 season, Cahill re-joined Halep’s team up to now.

Newer routes for Simona Halep and Darren Cahill

Earlier in April 2021, Halep spoke highly of Cahill and shared how she gains confidence when her coach travels with her tournaments.

“We trained very well back home. Now, he’s here for the first time, and it’s nice to have him, the whole clay-court season because it’s my favourite season, and to have him, means a lot. I have confidence when he’s around, and yeah, we have great days”.

This year, Halep’s had been struggling with leg injuries. Her injuries not only forced her to have a truncated season but also saw her crash out of the top-10 rankings for the first time since 2014. Despite her struggles on the tour, Simona Halep marked a personal high this year.

On September 15th, Halep married her fiancé, Toni Luruc in her hometown of Constanta. Her then-coach, Darren Cahill had congratulated the couple and had tweeted, “The official signing today of marriage for Simo and Toni in Romania.

Congratulations and big hugs to you both. An amazing couple. Have a great celebration with family and friends tonight!”
