Astana Open: Top seeds Yulia Putintseva, Alison van Uytvanck reach pre-quarters

Almost all seeded players reached the second round of the Astana Open across the first two days of play in the Kazakhstan capital, Nur-Sultan. On Monday, second seed Alison van Uytvanck and seventh seed Varvara Gracheva played their first-round matches.

The Belgian defeated Kazakh wildcard Khibek Kulambayeva 6-3, 6-4. In the second round, Van Uytvanck will take on Anna-Lena Friedsam. The German came from a set down to defeat Arina Rodionova 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Meanwhile, Gracheva defeated Kristyna Pliskova 6-3, 7-6(5) in their first-round clash.

The Russian will play Lesia Tsurenko for a place in the quarter-finals. The Ukrainian qualifier advanced to the second round after her first-round opponent, Vitalia Diatchenko retired mid-match. Tsurenko was leading 6-1, 3-1 in the match when Diatchenko stopped play.

Astana Open: Greet Minnen exits

On Tuesday, top seed Yulia Putintseva, the country’s no. 1 player took her spot in the round-of-16. Putintseva defeated Georgian Ekaterine Gorgodze 6-1, 6-2 in 69 minutes. For a place in the quarter-finals, the 49th ranked Putintseva will play Vera Lapko.

The Belarusian defeated Jule Niemeier 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round. Third seed Kristina Mladenovic also reached the second round. The Frenchwoman needed two hours and 53 minutes to complete a 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-4 win over Kazakh wildcard Anna Danlina.

For a place in the quarter-finals, Mladenovic will play Anastasia Potapova. The Russian wildcard defeated Dutch player Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove, 7-5, 6-1. Ana Konjuh beat Polish lucky loser Urszula Radwanska 7-6(6), 6-1 to take her place in the round-of-16.

The Croatian fifth seed will play Anastasia Gasanova next. The Russian defeated Belarusian qualifier Yuliya Hatouka 6-1, 6-1 in the first round on Monday. Rebecca Peterson, the Swedish sixth seed, moved into the second round with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win over Stefanie Voegele.

Next up for Peterson is Zarina Diyas. The Kazakh beat Russian qualifier Anastasia Zakharova 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-5. Eighth-seeded Clara Burel reached the second round after her first-round opponent, Mandy Minella retired while down 2-5 in the match.

The French player will take on Jaqueline Cristian next. The Romanian beat Russian qualifier Natalia Vikhlyantseva 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. The only seed to crash out of the Astana Open in the first round was the fourth-seeded Greet Minnen.

Kaja Juvan defeated the Belgian 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in two hours and 27 minutes. The Slovenian will bid for a spot in the quarter-finals against Aleksandra Krunic. The Serbian got through to the round-of-16 with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over fellow qualifier, Britain’s Katie Boulter on Monday.
