Garbine Muguruza began her Chicago Fall Tennis Classic campaign on a triumphant note on Tuesday. The second-seeded Spaniard defeated American Ann Li, 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 30 minutes. Muguruza had 15 winners to Li’s 13.
She also saved four of the six break points she faced while converting four of seven break points on Li’s serve. In the third round, the former world no. 1 will take on either 14th seed Victoria Azarenka or Hailey Baptiste.

Chicago Fall Tennis Classic: Camila Giorgi bucks the trend of seeds winning
A few other seeded players took their place in the second round.
Jil Teichmann, seeded 16th, defeated Kaia Kanepi 7-6(3), 7-5 and will play Magda Linette next. Linette defeated Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-4. Tamara Zidansek, the 13th seed also reached the second round with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sloane Stephens.
Next up for the Slovenian is Tereza Martincova. Martincova ousted Maria Camila Osorio Serrano 6-3, 7-5. Anett Kontaveit, the 11th seed beat Madison Brengle 6-4, 6-3 to reach the second round. The Ostrava Open champion will play Mai Hontama next.
Sixth seed Ons Jabeur needed merely 46 minutes to post a 6-1, 6-0 win over Su-Wei Hsieh in the second round. The Tunisian will play either ninth seed Jessica Pegula or Andrea Petkovic for a place in the quarter-finals. Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse upset the 15th-seeded Camila Giorgi in their first-round clash at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic.
For a place in the round-of-16, Ruse will play Kateryna Kozlova.
