Chicago Fall Tennis Classic: Elina Svitolina storms into pre-quarters

Top seed Elina Svitolina opened her campaign at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic on Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Amanda Anisimova in the second round. Speaking after her win on-court, Svitolina shared, “The time went really quick and I'm really happy that I chose to come back and with the win today as well.

It's never easy to play against Amanda. She's striking the ball really well and she's a great competitor. It's been a good day for me today and I'm really happy I finished the match in two sets”. In the round-of-16, the Ukrainian will play Elena-Gabriela Ruse.

The Romanian defeated Kateryna Kozlova 7-5, 6-2 in their second-round clash in an hour and 54 minutes. Third seed Belinda Bencic also moved into the third round. The Swiss dropped the opening set against Maddison Inglis but turned around the match swiftly to claim a 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 win in two hours and 10 minutes.

After the match, Bencic admitted that it took her a while to get accustomed to the playing conditions and that once she was able to adapt to them, she was able to control the match better. “I think the biggest adjustment I made was putting my serve in the court sometimes.

I definitely had a lot of trouble with that, but I tried to stay calm, tried to play every point, not think about the score and just go for it”. For a place in the quarter-finals, Bencic will play Tereza Martincova.

The Czech upset 13th seed Tamara Zidansek 6-2, 7-5 in their second-round match. Bencic’s compatriot, the 16th-seeded Jil Teichmann also reached the third round. Teichmann defeated Magda Linette 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 26 minutes.

Next up for the 42nd-ranked Teichmann is Marketa Vondrousova. The Czech upset the fourth-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 12 minutes.

Chicago Fall Tennis Classic: Americans move on

American Shelby Rogers notched an upset over eighth seed Bianca Andreescu.

Rogers won 6-4, 7-5 in an hour and 53 minutes. She’ll play Japanese qualifier, Mai Hontama next. Hontama advanced to the round-of-16 after her opponent, 11th seed Anett Kontaveit pulled out of the tournament ahead of their match with an injury to her left thigh.

The Estonian, who won the title in Ostrava last week, said, “I am sad to have to withdraw from my match today but need to listen to my body this late in the season. Thank you to the tournament for hosting us, and I wish them and the players luck the rest of the week”.

Rogers’ fellow countrywoman, Jessica Pegula also reached the third round. The ninth-seeded Pegula defeated Andrea Petkovic 6-2, 7-5 in an hour and 31 minutes in their second-round clash. She’ll play Ons Jabeur next.

Veronika Kudermetova, the 12th seed, also reached the third round with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Heather Dart. The Russian will play fifth seed Elena Rybakina for a place in the quarter-finals. Rybakina defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 29 minutes.
