Saturday’s play at Indian Wells saw a couple of notable upsets. Fifth seed Garbine Muguruza and sixth seed Maria Sakkari crashed out of the BNP Paribas Open after losing in their respective second-round matches. Ajla Tomljanovic ousted Muguruza 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in an hour and 52 minutes.
This is the first time that the Australian’s reached the third round in the Californian desert. Speaking after her win, Tomljanovic shared, “I was really looking forward to playing Garbine because I did lose (to her) the last couple of times.
I did try to focus on that one time I beat her and tried to channel that energy, so I was really happy that I got through today”. Meanwhile, for Muguruza, who’s seeking to qualify for the WTA Finals in Guadalajara, this defeat was a misstep since the Spaniard was fresh off from winning a title in Chicago the previous week.
The former world no. 1 could still qualify for the year-end tournament though. On the other hand, Tomljanovic will take on Tamara Zidansek. The 26th-seeded Slovenian won against Ana Konjuh 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in two hours and 13 minutes.
Indian Wells: Bianca Andreescu survives Alison Riske
Viktorija Golubic beat Sakkari 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and 33 minutes to make it through the round-of-32. Golubic saved six of the 10 break points, she faced while converting seven break points to outlast the Greek.
The Swiss finished with 99 points to Sakkari’s 95. For a place in the fourth round, Golubic will play Anna Kalinskaya. The Russian qualifier upset 28th-seeded Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. The last upset of the day came at the hands of Amanda Anisimova.
The American defeated 30th seed Camila Giorgi 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and 23 minutes. Anisimova will play third seed Barbora Krejcikova Zarina Diyas 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in their second-round match in two hours and three minutes. Meanwhile, the 2019 and defending champion, 16th seed Bianca Andreescu advanced to the third round after a late-night win against American, Alison Riske.
Andreescu needed two hours and 48 minutes to complete a 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-2 victory. In the third round at Indian Wells, the Canadian will play 18th seed Anett Kontaveit. The Estonian reached the round-of-32 after her opponent, Italy’s Martina Trevisan retired mid-match.
Kontaveit was leading 6-3, 5-2 at the time of Trevisan’s decision to stop the match.
