Transylvania Open: Jaqueline Cristian reaches 2R; Irina-Camelia Begu upset in 1R

Sixth seed Marta Kostyuk defeated Bernarda Pera to reach the second round of the Transylvania Open on Tuesday. The Ukrainian won 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 13 minutes. Kostyuk won 73% of her first-serve points while Pera won 52% of her first-serve points.

The 55th-ranked Kostyuk won 50% of her second-serve points while the American won 45% of her second-serve points. Kostyuk saved two of the four break points, she faced while converting four of the 10 break point opportunities she had on Pera’s serve.

Kostyuk finished with 19 points more than Pera’s 53 for the match. For a place in the quarter-finals, Kostyuk will play Mona Barthel. In the first-round clash between two Romanians, wildcard Irina Bara got the better of her seventh-seeded compatriot, Irina-Camelia Begu.

Bara won 7-6(2), 0-6, 6-4 in two hours and 26 minutes despite winning nine fewer points than Begu’s 99. Bara will play Rebecca Peterson of Sweden in the second round. Peterson defeated Croatian lucky loser, Jana Fett 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 12 minutes.

Peterson was broken just once across the course of the match while she converted five of the 11 opportunities that came her way. She ended the match with 59 points to Fett’s 38.

Transylvania Open: Jaquelina Cristian makes a gritty start

Another Romanian who made it through to the round-of-16 in Cluj-Napoca on Tuesday was Jaqueline Cristian.

Coming from a set down, Cristian saw off Kaja Juvan 3-6, 7-6(8), 7-6(3) in two hours and 46 minutes, saving a couple of match points in the process. For a spot in the quarters, Cristian will take on fifth seed Ajla Tomljanovic.

Russian Varvara Gracheva also booked her place in the second round with a win over Andrea Petkovic. Gracheva won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in two hours and four minutes. She’ll face either top seed Simona Halep or Elena-Gabriela Ruse next.

Third seed Emma Raducanu made her much-awaited debut at the Transylvania Open. Raducanu defeated Polona Hercog 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to win her maiden WTA match. Lastly, Alison Van Uytvanck also made it through to the round-of-16. The Belgian defeated Danka Kovinic 6-4, 6-4.
