Adelaide International 1: Iga Swiatek sees off Leylah Fernandez in youngsters' clash

Iga Swiatek claimed first blood in her rivalry against Leylah Fernandez as she defeated the Canadian to reach the quarter-finals of the Adelaide International 1 on Thursday. The Pole dropped just three games as she wrapped up a 6-1, 6-2 victory in an hour and 14 minutes.

Although Swiatek needed five match points to quell her opponent, she remained untested throughout the match. She didn’t face any break points and had more than twice as many winners as unforced errors – 17 to eight – to finish the match in her favour.

In her on-court interview following her win, Swiatek noted, “I was in the mood, and that was great because I was pretty stressed since... I was playing against a younger girl, which is pretty new for me. She's pretty talented and she's a Grand Slam finalist, so I knew it was going to be tricky… I felt really confident.

And I'm pretty happy that I could finish it really quickly and I didn't let go of focus”. In the quarter-finals, Swiatek will take on former world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka. The two-time former Australian Open champion defeated Priscilla Hon 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and 27 minutes in their second-round clash.
