Adelaide International 2: Aryna Sabalenka loses 2nd consecutive opener of 2022

A day after the Adelaide International 2 lost its second seed, Elina Svitolina, it was the turn of the tournament top seed, Aryna Sabalenka to crash out of the tournament in the first round. Swedish qualifier, Rebecca Peterson came from a set down to oust the Belarusian 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 in two hours and 18 minutes.

Sabalenka took a wildcard into the draw after suffering a similarly early exit in the first round of the Adelaide International 1 last week to Kaja Juvan. However, the same woes that had troubled her against the Slovenian spilled onto her match against Peterson.

Sabalenka hit 21 double faults – seven times as many as Peterson’s three – which shifted the momentum of the match in the latter’s favour. In the second round, Peterson will face Madison Brengle. The American won her first-round clash against Russian qualifier, Anastasia Potapova 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 in an hour and 57 minutes.

Sabalenka wasn’t the only seed to leave the tournament in the first round. Other seeds who were upset included seventh seed Jil Teichmann and ninth seed Sorana Cirstea.

Adelaide International 2: Seeds fall like nine-pins

American Lauren Davies ousted Teichmann 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 in two hours and 22 minutes.

In the second round, Davis will play Jasmine Paolini. The Italian won her first round against Australian qualifier, Storm Sanders 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 36 minutes. Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina took down Cirstea 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 25 minutes.

Next up for Kalinina is Alison Riske. Kalinina’s compatriot, Dayana Yastremska, however, lost in the first round. Tereza Martincova defeated the qualifier 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and six minutes. The Czech will play Madison Keys for a chance to reach the quarter-finals.

Australian wildcard Maddison Inglis set up a second-round clash against fourth seed Tamara Zidansek. Inglis won against lucky loser Danka Kovinic 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. The Slovenian, meanwhile, picked up a win against British qualifier Heather Watson, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(4).

Third seed Coco Gauff and eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova also reached the round-of-16 of the Adelaide International 2. Gauff won against Katerina Siniakova 6-1, 6-2 while the Russian beat Mayar Sherif 7-6(2), 6-4. For a spot in the quarters, Gauff will play Marta Kostyuk while Samsonova will take on Nuria Parrizas Diaz.
