Sydney Tennis Classic: Garbine Muguruza, Barbora Krejcikova lead seeds into last-8

Garbine Muguruza reached the quarter-finals of the Sydney Tennis Classic on Wednesday. The Spaniard seeded second – and the highest seed in the draw – defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-1, 7-6(4) in an hour and 26 minutes.

The Spaniard cruised in the opening set but the Russian mounted a comeback in the second set and raised five set points for herself. However, the former world no. 1 saved the lot before clinching the win in straight sets. Post-match, Muguruza said, “I think I started very good, playing the right way, making the shots.

I feel she made a couple (of) unforced errors very quickly, so that allowed me to escape in the score and close that first set very quickly. The second set was probably was going to be tougher, maybe she started to play better.

It got more equal, and I managed to save those set points that were very important and put pressure on her and force the tiebreak because once you're in the tiebreak, you feel like anything can happen. I just stood strong there”.

Sydney Tennis Classic: Elena Rybakina suffers a setback

In the quarters, Muguruza will take on another Russian, Daria Kasatkina. Kasatkina ousted Elise Mertens 6-3, 6-4 in their second-round match. Ons Jabeur got the better of Petra Kvitova in their pre-quarter-final match-up.

The seventh seed from Tunisia had a 0-4 win-to-loss record against the Czech going into the match. However, in the Australian warm-up tournament, Jabeur notched a 6-4, 6-4 victory against the former world no. 2. Next up for Jabeur is fourth seed Anett Kontaveit.

The Estonian, who’s good friends with Jabeur, ousted Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 16 minutes in their round-of-16 meeting. It was a good day for seeds as third seed Barbora Krejcikova and fifth seed Paula Badosa both entered the quarters of the Sydney Tennis Classic.

Krejcikova won against Jaqueline Cristian 6-1, 7-5 while Badosa defeated Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3, 6-4. Next up for Krejcikova is Caroline Garcia. The Frenchwoman reached the quarters after receiving a walkover from Elena Rybakina.

The latter was forced to withdraw from the event with an injury to her left thigh. Lastly, Badosa awaits the winner between Oceane Dodin and Belinda Bencic. The match was suspended with Dodin leading 6-2, 5-6 against the Swiss.
