Monterrey Open: Elina Svitolina marks a statement with 1R win

Elina Svitolina, the top seed at the Monterrey Open, reached the second round with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win over Anastasia Potapova. The Ukrainian had previously said that she wouldn’t play against Russian and Belarusian players on account of the invasion of her country by Russia and Belarus but later on went on to decide to play against her opponent, who’s Russian.

Svitolina needed just 64 minutes to post her victory. After the match, talking with the press, Svitolina shared, “It's a special one because of what we are going through right now in Ukraine, it's terrifying. It's been six days and all the Ukrainian tennis players and Ukrainians who are there, we have been really terrified with what is happening”.

In the second round, Svitolina will play Viktoriya Tomova.

Monterrey Open: Nuria Parrizas Diaz survives seeds' crash

Petra Martic ousted third seed Madison Keys in their first-round clash. The Croatian came from a set down to upset the 2022 Australian Open semi-finalist, 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3 in two hours and 20 minutes.

Martic will face Marie Bouzkova next. The Czech, who reached the final of the Guadalajara Open last week, won against Italian qualifier, Sara Errani, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 24 minutes. Eighth Ann Li was also upset in the first round.

China’s Xinyu Wang routed the American, 6-2, 6-1 in just 57 minutes. Wang will play Beatriz Haddad Maia next. Wang’s compatriot, Qinwen Zheng also took her place in the second round with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Lucia Bronzetti of Italy.

Zheng will play second seed Sorana Cirstea for a spot in the quarters. Another Chinese player, Qiang Wang also reached the round-of-16 with a victory over Hungarian qualifier, Dalma Galfi in the first round. Wang won 6-7(0), 6-1, 6-4 in two hours and three minutes.

In the second round, Wang will play Mayar Sherif. The Egyptian came through in her opening-round match against Seone Mendez, 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-4. Earlier, the Australian replaced Sloane Stephens in the draw after the American decided not to play the tournament on account of a modification to her calendar schedule.

Lastly, sixth seed Nuria Parrizas Diaz also reached the second round at the Monterrey Open. The Spaniard defeated Misaki Doi 6-2, 6-1 and will play Heather Watson for a chance to reach the quarter-finals. Photo Credit: Elina Svitolina Twitter
