Swiss players Stefanie Voegele and Viktorija Golubic had contrasting results in their respective second-round matches at the Lyon Open on Wednesday. Sorana Cirstea, the second seed in the draw, defeated Voegele, 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and 33 minutes.

The Romanian won 69% of her first-serve points to Voegele’s 68% and 46% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 24%. The world no. 30 saved four of the seven break points she faced while converting six of the 11 break points that came her way on her opponent’s serve.

In the quarter-finals, Cirstea will play Anna Bondar. Bondar advanced into the quarters after her round-of-16 opponent, Katie Boulter withdrew mid-match because of an injury. The Hungarian was leading the Briton 6-3 at the time of the latter’s decision to not go on in the match.

Lyon Open: Viktorija Golubic, Vitalia Diatchenko reach pre-quarters

Meanwhile, Voegele’s compatriot, the third-seeded Golubic reached the second round after beating Japanese lucky loser, Mai Hontama. Golubic lost the opening set but pushed back against her opponent to claim a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win after two hours and 10 minutes of play.

Hontama was near unplayable in the first set as she won almost 77% points off her first serves to Golubic’s 38% and didn’t face a single break point. Across the latter two sets, she faced 12 break points while losing her serve six times.

In the second round, Golubic will play Vitalia Diatchenko. Diatchenko who also played her first round on Wednesday, defeated Anna Lena Friedsam, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. In the last second-round match on Wednesday at the Lyon Open, Alison Van Uytvanck defeated Varvara Gracheva.

The seventh seed won 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 22 minutes, winning 68% of her first-serve and 50% of her second-serve points. In comparison, Gracheva won 50% of her first-serve points and 32% of her second-serve points. In the quarter-finals, Van Uytvanck awaits either Caroline Garcia or Martina Trevisan.
