Lyon Open: Dayana Yastremska scores another momentous win to reach the last-eight

Dayana Yastremska reached the quarter-finals of the Lyon Open with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Spanish qualifier, Cristina Bucsa on Thursday. The Ukrainian wildcard needed 65 minutes to complete the win. Yastremska secured five breaks on Bucsa’s serve while conceding her serve twice in the match.

Post-match, the world no. 140 said that she was able to exert better control over her emotions in the second round as compared to when she played her first-round match. “Yesterday I tried to recover myself as fast as possible to prepare for my match today, and I’m still very nervous because I really want to win the matches for my country.

This tournament is very emotional for me, but I’m very happy with the win today. To be honest, I’m very happy that I’m here, that I’m in a safe place with my sister, and I’m happy to do the thing that I love, playing tennis.

Every point that I’m playing here, I’m enjoying a lot, and especially with the situation that we have now, I’m enjoying it like a thousand times more. I’m going to try my best to win my next match,” she added.

In the quarters, Yastremska will play Jasmine Paolini. The Italian fifth seed claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win over German Tamara Korpatsch in 59 minutes. Paolini’s compatriot, Martina Trevisan, however, lost her second-round match to Caroline Garcia.

Garcia, the only Frenchwoman left in the draw, clinched a hard-fought 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win in two hours and six minutes. For a place in the semi-finals, Garcia will play seventh seed Alison Van Uytvanck. Eighth seed Shuai Zhang also made it through to the quarters.

Zhang defeated Arantxa Rus, 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 33 minutes. Next up for Zhang is Vitalia Diatchenko. Diatchenko posted the sole upset of the day, ousting third seed and defending finalist of the Lyon Open, Viktorija Golubic, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4 in two hours and 52 minutes.
