Indian Wells: Simona Halep battles past wind, Coco Gauff to reach pre-quarters

Simona Halep defeated Coco Gauff in their third-round match at Indian Wells on Sunday to advance to the pre-quarter-finals. Halep won 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 16 minutes in what was the American’s 18th birthday. Of the two players, visibly it was Halep who was able to turn the windy conditions to her favour.

The 24th seed won 68% of her first-serve points to Gauff’s 70%, and 64% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 20%. Three breaks on Gauff’s serve allowed Halep to clinch victory even as she went on to save all four break points, she faced.

Lastly, in terms of winners and unforced errors, Halep had 11 winners to Gauff’s 18 and 12 unforced errors to the 16th seed’s 33. The Romanian, who won the title in the Californian desert almost eight years ago in 2015, will next play 26th seed and fellow countrywoman, Sorana Cirstea at the top of the first half of the draw.

Cirstea came from a set down to defeat Anna Kalinskaya 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 in two hours and 22 minutes in their third-round match.

Indian Wells: Petra Martic ousts Emma Raducanu

Meanwhile, in the American derby between Madison Keys and Alison Riske, the 25th-seeded Keys claimed a 7-6(4), 6-1 victory in an hour and 21 minutes.

Keys converted all five break points she had on Riske’s serve while saving two of the three break points, she faced. In the fourth round, Keys will play qualifier Heather Dart. The Briton pulled through against Kaia Kanepi, 7-6(4), 6-3 in an hour and 40 minutes.

Dart’s fellow Briton, Emma Raducanu, however, exited the tournament in the third round after falling to Petra Martic. The 2021 US Open winner, seeded 11th in the draw, served for the win in the 10th game of the third set but wasn’t able to do so, and the Croatian won the last three games to pocket a 6-7(3), 6-4, 7-5 win in two hours and 46 minutes.

Martic will face 28th seed, Liudmila Samsonova. Samsonova won her third-round clash against Danka Kovinic, 6-4, 7-6(4). Lastly, third seed Iga Swiatek and 15th seed Angelique Kerber have set a round-of-16 encounter at Indian Wells.

The Pole notched a comeback win over 29th seed Clara Tauson, 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-1 while the German beat 23rd seed Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-1.
