Tatjana Maria won the 2021 Copa Colsanitas with a win over Laura Pigossi in the final on Sunday. The German prevailed 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the encounter that lasted half-past the two-hour mark. Pigossi put in 77% of her first-serves in with Maria putting in 58%.
But where Maria won 77% of her first-serve points, her opponent managed to win only 58%. Of the two players, it was Pigossi who won more points off her second serves – 59% to Maria’s 44%. In terms of winners and unforced errors, while Pigossi went for her shots that accounted for her hitting 23 winners, four more than Maria’s tally of 19, it also meant that she had a higher count of unforced errors – 17 more than Maria’s 13 unforced errors.

Likewise, it was also Pigossi whose serve came under trouble more often in the match. She faced 12 break points and saved eight of these. In comparison, Maria faced just five break points and saved three of them.
The only time in the match where Maria dropped her serve was in the second set. In the opening set, she didn’t face any break point while in the deciding set, she saved both break points she faced. Following her win, Maria’s now ranked 114th in the world, climbing 123 places in the WTA rankings.
Her opponent, Pigossi, who was ranked 212th in the world, has now reached a new career-high in the WTA rankings this week, in the 126th spot, marking a gain of 86 spots. Both players had come through qualifiers en route to reaching the final.
