Garbine Muguruza, the highest-ranked player at the Rabat Open moved into the second round on Monday with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina. The Spaniard who’s been struggling to find her form this season will play Italian Martina Trevisan.
Trevisan won against Chinese qualifier, Xiaodi You, 6-0, 6-4. Muguruza’s compatriot, Nuria Parrizas Diaz, who’s seeded third this week, also reached the second round. Parrizas Diaz beat Canadian qualifier, Carol Zhao, 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-2.
She will next play Kristina Mladenovic. In the first round, Mladenovic came through a French derby against lucky loser, Tessah Andrianjafitrmo, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7) on Tuesday.
Rabat Open: Ajla Tomljanovic encounters no problems
Second seed Ajla Tomljanovic reached the quarter-finals after winning her opening two rounds on Sunday and Tuesday.
In the first round, the Australian won against Spain’s Irene Burillo Escorihuela, 6-2, 6-1. In the second round, she beat Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, 7-5, 6-2. Tomljanovic now awaits either fifth seed Anna Bondar or Karolina Kucova next.
In her first-round match, Bondar defeated Italian qualifier, Cristiana Ferrando, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Kucova beat Catherine Harrison 6-2, 6-0 in their opening-round clash. Fourth seed Mayar Sherif also reached the round-of-16 on Tuesday with a 6-0, 6-2 win over France’s Chloe Paquet.
The Egyptian will play Claire Liu next. The American won against Kamilla Rakhimova, 6-4, 6-3 in their opener. Anna Kalinskaya and Rebecca Peterson are the only two seeded names who crashed out of the Rabat Open in the first round.
Lucia Bronzetti of Italy ousted the eighth-seeded Kalinskaya, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3. Bronzetti will play Clara Burel next. The French player won her opener against Panna Udvardy of Hungary, 7-6(4), 7-6(3). On Sunday, Croatian wildcard, Petra Marcinko ousted the ninth-seeded Peterson, 6-0, 2-6, 7-5. Marcinko eventually lost in the second round to Astra Sharma. Sharma reached the quarter-finals with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win.
