French Open: Another day, another win for Iga Swiatek as the top seed reaches 3R

Iga Swiatek’s scintillating form propelled her into the third round of the 2022 French Open in the afternoon on Thursday. The world no. 1 defeated Alison Riske, 6-0, 6-2 in 61 minutes. The score was a reverse of her first-round win against Lesia Tsurenko.

Swiatek began the match with a break and ended it in the same way. She dictated the pace of the match, be it when scoring winners and even when hitting errors. On her part, Riske didn’t play badly but she wasn’t able to do much with her shot-making to trouble her opponent.

And it wasn’t until the fourth game of the second set that Riske was able to open her mark on the scoreboard. The relief she had on her face and her celebration after that, reflected Swiatek’s control over the proceedings.

As it turned out, Riske held serve only once more in the match, with Swiatek securing the win on her second match point in the eighth game. The Pole didn’t face any break points and converted five of the nine break points she had on the American’s serve.

She also had almost four times as many winners as Riske – 23 to the latter’s six and finished with one unforced error more than her opponent – 15 to the latter’s 14. Riske was also undone by 21 forced errors, a dozen more than Swiatek’s nine.

French Open: Simona Halep crashes out

This was Swiatek’s 30th win on the go, and in the third round, the 20-year-old will take on Danka Kovinic. The Montenegrin won against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, 6-3, 7-5. Meanwhile, former champion Simona Halep didn’t fare all too well against Qinwen Zheng in their second-round clash.

The Chinese player came from a set down to oust the 19th seed, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in an hour and 56 minutes. Zheng will play either Alize Cornet or 13th seed Jelena Ostapenko. In the all-American round-of-64 clash between Danielle Collins and Shelby Rogers, the latter got the better of her ninth-seeded compatriot, 6-4, 6-3.

For a place in the fourth round of the French Open, Rogers will now play 20th seed Daria Kasatkina. Kasatkina got the better of Mexican qualifier, Fernanda Contreras Gomez, 6-0, 6-3 in their second-round encounter. Photo Credit: Iga Swiatek Twitter
