Libema Open: Aryna Sabalenka sets title showdown against Ekaterina Alexandrova

Aryna Sabalenka and Ekaterina Alexandrova will take on each other in the final of the Libema Open after winning their respective semi-finals on Saturday. In the first semi-final, the seventh-seeded Alexandrova pipped sixth-seed Veronika Kudermetova, 6-3, 6-1 in 76 minutes.

Alexandrova won 80% of her first-serve points to Kudermetova’s 50%. She saved three of the four break points she faced while converting five of the six break points on the latter’s serve. In terms of winners and unforced errors, Alexandrova had 21 winners to her opponent’s four and 14 unforced errors, six fewer than her rival’s 20.

After her win, Alexandrova shared, “It always feels great to be in a final, especially here in the first tournament on grass. I didn't expect to be in the final in the first few matches for sure, because I couldn't feel the surface and everything was flying so far away from the court, but I'm glad I could find my game here”.

Libema Open: Aryna Sabalenka no match for Shelby Rogers

In the second semi-final, Sabalenka got past Shelby Rogers, 7-6(6), 6-0 in 95 minutes. The opening set, as the score indicates, was closely fought with the American even serving for the match in the 12th game after having overturned a break of serve earlier in the set.

However, Sabalenka thwarted her from doing so and prevailed in the tie-break. The second set was entirely one-sided as the world no. 6 didn’t let up on the momentum she’d gained after taking the opener. Sabalenka’s dominance ensured she finished the match with 22 winners, six more than her unforced error count.

The Libema Open final between Aryna Sabalenka and Ekaterina Alexandrova will be the fifth time the two will be facing each other. Both of them have won two previous matches each with Alexandrova winning their most-recent clash that came at the Moscow Open in 2021.
