Bad Homburg Open: Simona Halep survives Katerina Siniakova to reach pre-quarters

Top seed Daria Kasatkina booked a place in the quarter-finals of the Bad Homburg Open on Tuesday. Kasatkina came through against Jule Niemeier 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in an hour and 43 minutes. Kasatkina’s level dipped in the second set and it was the only set in which she lost her serve.

The set saw both players exchange breaks twice before the German wildcard broke Kasatkina’s serve for the third time to level the match. In the deciding set, Kasatkina saved all six break points she faced while breaking Niemeier’s serve twice to take the win.

Not much separated the two players in terms of first-serve points won – Kasatkina won 64% to Niemeier’s 63.9%. But where the higher-ranked player won 48% of her second-serve points, Niemeier finished with 32%.

Bad Homburg Open: Bianca Andreescu ousts Martina Trevisan

In the quarter-finals, Kasatkina will play either Katie Swan or Bianca Andreescu.

Andreescu won her first-round match on Tuesday, scoring an upset over seventh seed Martina Trevisan. The Canadian needed an hour and 15 minutes to clinch a 6-3, 6-1 win. Caroline Garcia also reached the quarter-finals on Tuesday with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kamilla Rakhimova.

The Frenchwoman completed the match in an hour and 28 minutes. Meanwhile, Sabine Lisicki’s campaign in the tournament began with a win over compatriot Tamara Korpatsch in the first round. The former Wimbledon finalist who received a main draw wildcard took an hour and 49 minutes to win 6-4, 7-6(5).

In the second round, Lisicki will play Greet Minnen. Fourth seed Simona Halep and sixth Amanda Anisimova also made it through to the second round of the Bad Homburg Open. The Romanian dropped the opening set against Katerina Siniakova but prevailed 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 after two hours and 18 minutes of play.

The American also lost the first set in her match against Alison Van Uytvanck but came back 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) in an hour and 57 minutes. Halep will play Tamara Zidansek next while Anisimova’s opponent will be countrywoman, Ann Li. Photo Credit: Bad Homburg Open
