Rothesay International: Petra Kvitova and Jelena Ostapenko set up title bid

Petra Kvitova and Jelena Ostapenko reached the final of the Rothesay International in Eastbourne on Friday. In the first semi-final, the 14th-seeded Czech took out the 15th-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia. In the second semi-final Ostapenko beat Camila Giorgi.

Kvitova needed an hour and 57 minutes to beat her fellow left-handed opponent, 7-6(5), 6-4. The only break of serve in the match came in the second set on the Brazilian’s serve. Kvitova won 71% of her first-serve points to Haddad Maia’s 68% and almost 74% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 56%.

Kvitova also had more than twice as many winners as Haddad Maia – 27 to the latter’s 12.

The two-time Wimbledon champion’s win also meant that Haddad Maia’s run of consecutive victories was halted at 12.

Incidentally, Haddad Maia’s victories had also come against Kvitova, in the opening round at the Birmingham Classic. After her win, Kvitova said, “It was a tough one, that’s what I expected. It was about the service, that was a key to the tiebreak in the first set and the early break in the second.

Just one break in the whole match, so it was really a grass game today”. Meanwhile, in the other semi-final, the eighth-seeded Ostapenko reached her second consecutive final in the event. The Latvian took just 68 minutes to wrap up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Giorgi.

Ostapenko won 78% of her first-serve points to Giorgi’s 57% and 58% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 45%. The defending titlist of the Rothesay International saved both break points she faced while converting four break points on the Italian’s serve.
