Wimbledon: Barbora Krejcikova, Katerina Siniakova oust top seeds for title

Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova have won the 2022 Wimbledon women's doubles title after beating Elise Mertens and Shuai Zhang. Krejcikova and Siniakova, the second-seeded duo, saw off first-seeded Mertens and Zhang 6-2 6-4 to lift their second Wimbledon title.

In 2018, Krejcikova and Siniakova lifted their maiden Wimbledon team title. Four years later, Krejcikova and Siniakova lifted the main glory once again and now they have five Grand Slam titles as a duo. Krejcikova and Siniakova started the 2022 season with a victory at the Australian Open but then didn't get a chance to compete for the French Open title.

Krejcikova and Siniakova were scheduled to play the French Open doubles but Krejcikova tested positive for COVID-19 just before their match so they were forced to withdraw from the tournament. A month and a half later, Krejcikova and Siniakova put up a great run at Wimbledon to lift their second Grand Slam title of the year.

Krejcikova, Siniakova dominated Mertens and Zhang

Krejcikova and Siniakova got off to a good start, claiming the first break of the match in the second game to open a 2-0 lead. Mertens and Zhang had a break point in the third game but failed to convert as Krejcikova and Siniakova took a 3-0 lead.

In the eighth game - when Mertens and Zhang were serving to stay in the first set - Krejcikova and Siniakova claimed their second break to seal the opener. After losing the first set, Mertens and Zhang claimed their first break of the match in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead.

Just when it seemed Mertens and Zhang found their rhythm and that they would send the match into a third set, they suffered a collapse. Krejcikova and Siniakova absolutely dominated the next three games as they broke Mertens and Zhang in the eighth and 10th games to overturn a second set deficit and complete a straight-set win. Krejcikova and Siniakova lost only one point in the last three games of the match.
