Granby Open: Daria Kasatkina, Daria Saville survive seeds' exodus to reach last-eight

Daria Kasatkina bucked the trend of upsets on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals of the Granby Open. The top seed of the WTA 250 event, Kasatkina defeated Magdalena Frech, 6-3, 6-2 after an hour and 20 minutes of play. Kasatkina’s serve was considerably better than in the first round and she finished the match with just two double faults unlike previously.

And although she failed to save either of the two break points she faced, she broke Minnen on six of the seven occasions she had a break point. She finished the match with 58 points, 23 more than the Belgian’s 35.

The Spaniard, seeded fifth in the draw, took an hour and 48 minutes to complete a 6-2, 6-4 win over Harriet Dart on Tuesday. Parrizas Diaz saved 13 of the 15 break points she faced while converting five of the 11 break points she had on Dart’s serve.

This year’s Wimbledon semi-finalist, Tatjana Maria also reached the quarter-finals of the Canadian event. The German upset fourth seed Anna Bondar, 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 22 minutes. Maria will play France’s, Diane Parry.

Parry also posted an upset of her own, over eighth seed Tereza Martincova. After an hour and 42 minutes of play, Parry claimed a 6-3, 7-6(1) win. Canadian hopeful Rebecca Marino took out third seed Jasmine Paolini in their round-of-16 clash.

Paolini claimed the opening set but Marino rebounded to clinch a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory after an hour and 45 minutes. Marino’s next opponent will be 10th seed Marta Kostyuk. The Ukrainian took two hours and 10 minutes to get past Canadian qualifier, Marina Stakusic, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-1.

Lastly, at the bottom of the Granby Open draw, Xiyu Wang and ninth seed Daria Saville have set up a quarter-final clash. Wang beat Canadian Cadence Brace, 7-6(4), 6-1. Saville came through against Brace’s compatriot, Katherine Sebov, 6-1, 6-0 in merely 63 minutes.
