Guadalajara Open: Silver lining in loss for Daria Kasatkina who makes WTA Finals cut

Daria Kasatkina lost her third-round match at the Guadalajara Open on Thursday. Anna Kalinskaya defeated Kasatkina 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 after two hours and 14 minutes of play. Kalinskaya saved eight of the 14 break points she faced while converting seven break points on Kasatkina’s serve.

She went on to finish the match with 91 points, just two more than her opponent’s 89. Despite the loss though, the takeaway was positive for Kasatkina. The 25-year-old who was seeded seventh this week in Mexico and who was trying to make to the eight-woman year-ending finale, managed to claim a place in the finals that will take place in Texas, the following week.

Alongside Kasatkina, Aryna Sabalenka also qualified for the WTA finals despite having suffered an upset in the second round on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, it was Victoria Azarenka who posted the result that enabled Kasatkina and Sabalenka’s qualification.

The former world no. 1 upset 14th seed Madison Keys, who was also in contention for a finals’ berth, in their third-round match. The two-time Major winner won 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-1 after over two hours of play. Azarenka will play Coco Gauff in the quarter-finals.

The fifth-seeded American needed just 61 minutes to come up with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Martina Trevisan in their round-of-16 meeting. Gauff saved eight of the nine break points she faced while converting five of the six break points she had on Trevisan’s serve.

Two more Americans joined Gauff in the quarter-finals. Sloane Stephens posted a 7-6(6), 7-5 win over sixth seed Caroline Garcia en route to win. Third seed Jessica Pegula notched a 6-4, 6-4 win over Bianca Andreescu in an hour and 34 minutes.

Stephens and Pegula will play each other for a chance to reach the semi-finals. Marie Bouzkova overcame a bagel in the first set to take out Liudmila Samsonova, 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 in almost two hours and 30 minutes. Bouzkova will take on Kalinskaya next.

Lastly, eighth seed Veronika Kudermetova and fourth seed Maria Sakkari will play each other for a semi-final spot at the Guadalajara Open. Kudermetova won against the 12th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko, 6-4, 6-4. Sakkari beat the 14th-seeded Danielle Collins 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 after two hours and 17 minutes. Photo Credit: WTA Twitter
